Sara Melzer received her MA and PhD from the University of Chicago French Department in the 1970’s. Since then, she has taught in the French Departments at Duke University and at UCLA. Her most recent book is on the hidden colonial histories of early modern France. She helped launch the Women’s Studies Program at UCLA and has taught in the program for many years. She also has published a book on Women and the French Revolution and another one on the importance of the body in French politics of the 17th and 18th centuries.

In this casual Salon we will provide reading materials in advance and Professor Melzer will guide us in thinking through the essays, both with respect to their historical and contemporary political significance.
